Emir of Kano (Nigeria) (original) (raw)

The Kano Emirate is a traditional state inNorthern Nigeria with headquarters in the city of Kano, the capital of the modern Kano State. Preceded by the Emirate of Kano, the Kano Emirate Council was formed in 1903 after the British pacification of the Sokoto Caliphate. Various administrative re-organisations in during the reign of Sanusi Bayero (1963 - 2014) saw a gradual weaning of the Emirs powers. Although the Emir has limited formal powers, he continues to exert considerable authority and provides leadership on issues such as the tension between Christians and Muslims in northern Nigeria.

Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was selected to succeed his great uncle Ado Bayero as the Emir of Kano 08 June 2014. There was some controversy over the appointment as it was believed to have been politically motivated. Many had also expected Bayero's son to succeed him as Emir and supporters of Bayero's son angrily protested Sanusi's appointment. He was formally crowned as Emir Muhammadu Sunusi II on 09 June 2014, making him the 14th Emir of Kano.
